What is the Morning After Pill?
The Morning After Pill also known as "Emergency Contraceptive" is a contraceptive that can stop you from becoming pregnant if contraception failed or wasn't used.
The Morning After Pill works best if taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex, but the term 'Morning After' pill is a little misleading as the pill actually works up to 72 hours (three days) after sex.
How Does it Work?
By preventing ovaries from releasing an egg
Altering the lining of the womb, so a fertilised egg can't embed itself there.
How Effective is it?
It prevents about 95% of pregnancies from developing if it is taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. This decreases to an estimated 85% if taken within 24-48 hours and to 58% if taken within 48-72 hours, so it is important to take the first dose as soon as possible.
